Island Wide, Along the Tide – a Marine Debris Event
Volunteers and holiday makers will come together on beaches across Phillip Island to tackle the issue of marine debris at Island Wide, Along the Tide – a Marine Debris Event on Saturday 12 January 2019.
Phillip Island Nature Parks have partnered with Parley for the Oceans,Plastic Free Phillip Island and Boomerang Bags for the event which aims to connect and educate community and visitors, remove debris from Phillip Island beaches and improve habitat for wildlife and humans alike.
Community and visitors are invited to join in the full day program or select from individual activities throughout the day. The program includes island wide beach clean-ups, marine debris sorting, presentations by conservation experts and stalls with information and activities. Full Day volunteers will receive a Parley T-shirt, catered lunch and a water bottle. Parley will also be giving away prizes during the day.
“Marine Debris is an increasing problem on Phillip Island with one third of seabirds recorded to have plastic in their stomachs. But the tide is turning and you can be part of the solution by joining likeminded people to clean up beaches that so many birds and animals call home.” Said Rachael Ferguson, Volunteer Program Coordinator, Phillip Island Nature Parks.
Phillip Island Nature Park will then lead the sorting of the collected debris and enter the data into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database. It will then be up cycled and used to raise awareness of the issue of Marine Debris.
“The Time is now to end plastic pollution, and we are excited and extremely motivated to work on solutions in Australia” Said Christian Miller, Parley Australia.
Organisers are looking for 80 full day volunteers to be part of the day. For more details and to get involved:
