Nature Parks Board update – August & September 2019
The Phillip Island Nature Parks Board met in August and September to discuss a range of important issues and opportunities and the highlights of these meetings are outlined below.
Acquittal of Annual Budget and Business Plan
The Board reviewed the performance targets for the 2018/19 financial year and was pleased to note that the majority of targets had been achieved and key projects acquitted. The Board noted strong visitor numbers had been maintained with a total of over 1.12M visitors to our paid attractions. The financial strength achieved from this visitation allowed the Nature Parks to invest $4.5M into conservation, research and education activities.
Penguin Parade visitor centre redevelopment
The Board was delighted to note that most aspects of the Penguin Parade visitor centre redevelopment were nearing completion. The centre was officially opened by Premier Daniel Andrews, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale MP on 25 July, following a Community and Staff celebration on 19 July and a Stakeholder dinner on 23 July.
The Board was pleased to see that visitation to the Penguin Parade and the new centre had been strong throughout August, and also noted that the Destination Phillip Island Annual Tourism Conference was the first significant external function to be successfully hosted in the new building.
The building’s spectacular architectural design was also acknowledged by the Board who noted the announcement of its win at the 2019 International Architecture Awards, out of a field of over 380 submissions from 41 countries.
The Board approved the 2018-19 Annual Report which is due to be tabled in Parliament and then released to the public in mid to late October.
The Board viewed a map and preliminary summary of planning and strategies in place for nature-based assets across the Nature Parks. Discussions will continue in November to set priorities for these areas.
The Board received an update from the Marketing and Communications Manager including a summary of the launch activities for the new Penguin Parade visitor centre. The Board was also updated on a range of digital and promotional activities planned for the near future to further promote the new visitor centre as well as the Nature Parks’ other attractions and activities.
November Planning Day
The Board set a date for a strategy and planning day in November in order to review and set priorities for a range of activities to be undertaken across the Nature Parks in the next financial year.
Penguin Parade Visitor Centre project acquittal and review
The Board reviewed the Nature Parks’ performance during the development of the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre against a range of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs had been established at the commencement of the design phase and included measures around sustainability, visitor experience and visual amenity. The Board was pleased with the outcomes of this review against identified KPIs.
The Board was delighted to note that the project was now almost complete, with the demolition of the old visitor centre now concluded, habitat handed back to the penguins and restoration and revegetation underway, additional car parking to be ready in October, and the final interpretation installations to be finalised between now and Christmas.
