Little Penguin research on Phillip Island
is 42 years old!!
Research on land Each night at the Penguin Parade, rangers count the number of penguins that cross the beach. We then work out the average number of penguins to cross the beach each night over the year.
Breeding success is monitored at study sites around the colony. We estimate the average number of chicks fledged per breeding pair each year.
Research at sea
A challenge for Little Penguin conservation and management is to understand and protect where penguins spend most of their lives, in the sea.
During the 2009/10 summer, we tracked little penguins to find where they were fishing. Mostly, they fed within 50 km of the Phillip Island colony. But you would be surprised at how far some penguins are going!!
